What is donut chart in tableau?

Donut chart in Tableau (also spelled doughnut) is a variant of the pie chart, with a empty circle at the centre allowing for additional information about the data as a whole to be included. Doughnut charts are similar to pie charts in that their aim is to show proportions values in the each section of donut chart.  This article describe how to create Donut chart in Tableau.

What kind of data can be used for donut chart?

Donut charts are used to show the proportions of categorical data, with the size of each piece  that represents the proportion of each category. Donut chat in tableau can be used for both absolute and percentage values. How to create a donut chart in Tableau with multiple measures?

Yes, you can create donut chart in tableau with multiple measures and dimension, first you need to create one Donut chart (follow the below mentioned steps) then you can drag dimension in rows to split one donut to multiple donut chart in tableau and you can also drag measure in tooltip to show more then two measures in one donut chart, this tooltip help you to show your different measures data once you will move your courser to the donut area.

Follow Below steps to create Donut Chart in tableau

First you need to create one Calculated field  as “Donut” and put inside is as 0
0 // put inside Donut calculated field
  • First, Drag Item Type in Rows and Calculated field in columns, but drag twice next to each other.
  • Then you will see two more box in Marks area

  • Now change the Second Donut into Dual axis

  • Now change the chart type option as Pie chart from drop down option for first Donut field
  • Then drag Units Sold on angel and region on Colours,
  • You will see circle not the section of pie chart as second Donut  (in Grey colour) are overlapping with first donut.

  • Now reduce the size of second donut from Mark area

  • Now change the second donut/circle into the white colour so that you will see whole in pie chart and it will represent the Donut Chart
  • Its also depends what you have background colour if you would like to make black background of you dashboard then this colour should be Black.

  • you can drag total unit sold in the centre of Donut in Second donut chart
