Tree Map in Tableau is the chart which provide a rectangular box view of your data, (Example: which items are a store’s best sellers). The tree branches are represented by rectangles and each sub-branch is shown as a smaller rectangle.
In this post we will learn how to design Tree Map in Tableau and tree map bar chart and each bar chart represent the Tree Map for different items in different colors.
What is a Tree map used for in Tableau?
A Tree Map chart provides a rectangular box view of your data and makes it easy to spot patterns. It is always in rectangular boxes and each rectangle shows the size of items and colors.

Steps to follow how to design Tree map:
- First drag the item type on rows and Units sold measure on text in Marks area, you will see the table view
- Now from Show Me option on right top corner select the Tree Map chart to convert table from Table to Tree Map chart
- Below will be the converted chart into Tree Map
- Now drag Region to split the one single Tree Map Chart by region wise so that Tree Map chart will start appears in Bar chart and each bar chart will show the Tree Map chart for each Items Type.
- You can change the colors of Item Type by dragging the Items on Colors Marks and the change colors pallet from colors option
- You can also drag the Item Type on Text option in Marks Area to see each items in Rectangle boxes
- You can also drag the “Units Sold” on Text option in Marks Area to see each values of Units Sold for each item type in Rectangle boxes
